Very strong. I definately would've also waited to post this. I would definately buy one. Also, why can't you have 5 colors?? Maybe I missed reading something somewhere. You could always print on a white shirt even though I like the blue shirt better...hmmm, dunno. I guess lose a gray, but then the cover wouldn't look that much differen't maybe try the cover as white? Who knows, I'd take the time to silk screen an extra color, in fact everything looks like it could fit on one screen anyway. Good stuff, I want one :) If this doesn't make it, e-mail me please. If you can find another way to print it cool, I'll buy one from ya if possible, if not, still e-mail me maybe I can help. I really really like this :) and I'm picky.

Although this is nice there is a legal hassle involved in producing this shirt. I dare say this will not got printed due to copyright issues, (aside from the 5th color) You're better off not submitting this during the competition. There is no way that threadless could legally print and distribute this shirt.
yikkon
yikkon on Oct 07 '03
they might if they ask pantone for permission, after all its positive advertising. Great work on this one! I'd love to buy this as a t-shirt and hooded top...

"There is no way that threadless could legally print and distribute this shirt."

not true. there are 2 ways. a) this guy works for them in the first place. 2) get pantone's permission. They may not care.

don't make bold statements if you don't know the law.

Still a great shirt.
tiggus
tiggus on Oct 08 '03
i'm confused, isn't it a three colour job. 1 colour being a percentage of the darker colour_?

anyway, a clever idea executed to perfection_

i like.

soupy33
soupy33 on Oct 08 '03
yeah fucking cool, in response to tiggus, you cant print a percentage in screenprinting, they all hold as a special so unlike 4 colour process, you cant do black as both greys as well to reduce the colours, each grey has to be a seperate screen.

legal battle, who cares, Che should be rich if he were alive, but i doubt he would be, besides pantone could be renamed as another word to hold more meaning, or just leave the name off, the idea still holds.

In response to dark54555: There are legal ways to allow this shirt to get printed. I don't see them as being considered in this venue. Also even if he worked for Pantone that would not allow him full freedom to use their brand in any way that he desired. Even if he designed the Pantone logo in the first place he would need permission to use it in his own portfolio. An often surprising fact to many designers. I made my statement in regards to the situation created by using another company's identity to make a profit on Threadless. You're right, they may not care. However, most companies do. I'll retract my "bold" statements when this gets printed.

All of that aside I still think it's well done.
Â¥s
   ¥s on Oct 08 '03
Well, i don't work for Pantone and i didn't design their logo either. It was simply put there to make it a little more clear what it. I don't really care if the logo stays on or not.

But if anybody can come up with something else to swap it with, please post :)

uh does everyone here just lose it for anything with a heart in it? i think it's well-done, but this corny-ass meg ryan heart shit is out of hand. i just wouldn't wear it. good for a middling emo band, maybe.
dromanell
dromanell on Oct 09 '03
i say lose the "pantone" and the type on the swatch book cover. if a person doesn't know what the illustration is of, they don't need the shirt in the first place. if you ARE a designer, then it shows exactly what your love and passion is. excellent design. 5.

4twenty3: actually, blandband is five colours (they dropped the dark green). but your point still stands. i think it all depends on whether the jakes like your design.

and judging by the response this tee is getting, they'd be stupid NOT to print it...

Sorry mate, I dont actually agree with everybody elses hysteria. For me, when objects are manipulated, it often helps if they are done so within their physical constraints, rather than being over modified to make the idea fit. You should maybe have a look at some of Alan Fletcher's collages, they often hit the nail right on the head with very little modification of the objects. Im not really into design in-jokes either.

Okay, sorry, that last comment was an accident. But yeah, this design is real good as far as recreating a worn cliche and turning it into something real good. I'm don't know very much about the legal shizz, so i'm not going to bother commenting on that, but anyway, this is a real nice one.

You could easily fix the copyright issue by putting the word "PROCESS" or "PROCESS CHIPS" or "PROCESS COATED" or something like that. That way it's not pantone but people still get the point. This shirt seems to be a designer's wet dream. Good job. I'd wear it to work :) I don't know about public in general. Maybe, depends on where I am.

Great stuff! Sweet concept & drawing. I'll buy one.

I'm astonished that contributors could rank this any lower than a 4 or 5!

It confirms my suspicion that many voters are either very young, idealistic & judgmental, or have personal axes to grind. The joke here is self-reflexive in terms of graphic design production, it is therefore excluding of most of a t-shirt audience, which is the nature of t-shirt graphic communications. But to recognise the terms of reference and automatically assume one's responsibility is to critique [or worse, offer banal observations about colour etc.] is a common pratfall. The competition score/comments method & database seems really good; one way of balancing the scoring would be to remove the 'zero' score, that great bastion of negativity – one mark for at least trying, surely?
