About my design

End the cycle! Death to all snakes!

Kinda cool, but the red spot where the snake was cut needs some work. It looks too much like you just took an oval and filled it with red in 'paint'. But it looks kinda cool.

End the circle. Definitely.

I would love to see the snake cycle without the scissors. I looks great as is. Much stronger image.

nice work on the snake, but the scissors and cut look sloppily made. If that's an intentional move, I don't get it.

Firstly, here is a larger image of the design:

http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/af223/myxxoma/large.jpg

^To all quips: entirely intentional (oval, sloppy). S'alright if you don't share my sensibilities.

A little on the process: The snake image was made by taking old biological illustrations in the public domain and isolating portions and positioning them, followed by painstakingly redrawing the connecting portions in the same style (yanno how these are made with tons of hatching lines to make the shading? Yeah I had to redraw hundreds and hundreds of those, I think like 12 hours of work at least).

Here are the only three images I used:

Thanks for all the positive comments guys!

On the circle: I wanted there to be a contrast of mediums in the design. There's the old style etching (the snake) which is very detailed and specific, the sketchy pencil scissors which is loose and looks hand done, and the ultra perfect circle which is entirely digital and hard.

I also was very influenced by an exhibition I saw recently of Richard Prince's work: http://www.gagosian.com/exhibitions/2008-11-08_richard-prince/

The scissors are awesome -- totally get the contrast with the detailed hatching work. Sweet. The red circle looks unfinished tho -- to make it perfect-looking, what about shininess on it like 3-D rendering?

Mr. Scott:

I find myself compelled to comment. The snake is expertly done. The scissors are neat. I think the main issue with the red circle is that there isn't enough information of that variety? That is, I suspect the people who didn't get it and ask for more detail do so because it appears unintentional, which I don't think it would if you repeated the idea (something like blood spatter or some such done in that style might justify it a little better). Prince, I think, gets away with it because he repeats the idea and it's explained by the theme.

What an unnecessarily detailed criticism of a shirt design. Excuse my neurosis.

No, thank you for it! I must admit I also have a bit of a problem with the circle, but only in the colored one on the natural t-shirt. I designed it to be black and white with only the circle red, but at the last minute decided to also offer a colored option (I feel like white t shirts are unpopular around here). I think in the black and white (larger here) because the red is so vibrant against the gray tones of the rest of the design, it makes more of a statement (which I'd hope would translate to being intentional). I think only after having worked with the black and white so long and accepting the red circle does the colored version make sense to me.

Anyway, thanks for the crit! I appreciate it.

snip! what really makes this design is that you used a great shape for the scissors. i don't mind the red oval, but would like to see a red edge on the other part. (just to fuss about something.)
