Horror is a genre that makes the viewers own body turn on them. It makes every gust of wind turn into a whisper; Every creak becomes a footstep. With many horror movies and books, the viewer has the security that in 2 hours time the lights will come back and everything will be at ease again. Good horror doesn't give that luxury. Good horror sticks around and barbs itself in. It bides its time in the back of your head, waiting for its trigger. For me that thorn of a fear is zombies.



I believe that almost everyone starts peering out their curtains after seeing the walking dead in one of Romero's films. The thing that gets me about zombies is the raw numbers. Whether they are the plague bearers, the biblical undead , or haitian voodoo type; There will always be more. Even with the good old un-coordinated slow zombies; there will always be more and they will steadily be coming. Those zombie flicks have made me mentally map out an escape strategy for all of my stomping grounds. Good horror brings about subtle quirks and compulsions like that. I know plans like that are irrational; but I wouldn't have it any other way.



In my design, This fine upstanding citizen of the undead is spelling out the definition of his existence. He is hoping that you will paralyzed by the sheer philosophical irony of the situation and maybe blow a blood vessel in the process (the brain is tastier that way). He is an ode to that little piece inside all of us that wakes up when the lights go out.

Super shading and style, great way you made this horrific but not disgusting to look at. I'd like it to say something different even though i read your reasoning and understand why you went there. Great stuff for the contest and as a first sub, good luck here!

I like how you mixed this rather gory subject with almost a pop art treatment. Same with the colors, which are bold but also faded. I too wish the zombie was spelling out something maybe a bit more subtle, but I can't think of anything either so I dunno.



I enjoyed reading your explanation, it brought back memories of my own sleepless nights after seeing Night of the Living Dead.
