Hmmm... what to say?

It's hard to tell if this design is

a negative statement or a positive

one. I'm hesitant about wearing

an image that treats something

worthy of my respect as a common

item to be worn on a regular t-shirt.

I think the image is very well done,

but I'm not convinced that I would

elicit a positive reaction if I wore

this shirt and walked into the middle

of a group of soldiers who have earned

purple hearts.

i’m giving you a 5 because of the execution

i’m torn though, on one hand EVERYTHING is fair game;

on the other hand my dad got one of those - he earned it

but i don’t score on whether I’d wear it - I score on the design and execution

So 5 absolutely

I agree. It was well rendered, but what's the motivation behind this shirt?
goodncrispy
goodncrispy on Sep 16 '05
Thanks for the comments. I'm new to this and I appreciate it.

As for my motivations, I guess it's somewhat of a response to the war and Katrina. One doesn't have to be in the armed forces or directly involved to become wounded or affected. I didn't intend to make light of or disrespect the medal.

On the other hand I think this, like any kind of artwork, has different meanings to different people.

TeresaM on Sep 16 '05
I know there are a lot of text haters, but if it's done right, I think this shirt could use a line saying something like what you said above (about not having to be directly involved in the war to be affected/wounded).

Losing your belongings because you're an idiot who bought a house in a town under sealevel and didn't evacuate when you were told does NOT earn you anything near a purple heart.

This is an insult. Zero.

"One doesn't have to be in the armed forces or directly involved to become wounded or affected"

yes, but one has to be in the forces to receive a purple heart. I agree that such a honorable medal shouldn't be worn on a common t-shirt, it kinda diminishes the meaning of it.
Kilroy.exe
Kilroy.exe on Sep 17 '05
Well, we better stop putting flags on t-shirts...You know, since we've all pledged our allegiance to it one time or another. It's quiet an honor to wear it, don't you think?

I do not think that this can be printed. It would have to be ok-ed with the US Government or someone, I dont know who. It is very illegal for someone to wear a purple heart if they have not been issued it from the military. (my dad belives that there it also language that prohibits a "likeness of " a purple heart from being worn.)

blunova is so edgy and controversial! Goin against the LIBERAL MEDIA tellin us that "ohh it was a great tragedy estimated more deaths than 9/11 and hundreds of thousands without homes" But the truth is that they were just dumb because they lived in new orleans! They should have seen the hurricane coming years ago, and used all their riches to move, perhaps to a nice villa in southern vermont! Thats what they DONT WANT TO TELL YOU. Thank god we have blunova here to tell us the truth. Don't even compare their plight to that of some dude getting a boil lanced off his ass in the gulf war.
morbidboy

The Purple Heart is reserved for great heroism and achievement in military service. It would be an insult to our men and women that risk their lives if this get printed.

look, I'm very unhappy about the war and with our president (they both suck), but I'll be very pissed off if I see a kid wearing this shirt while he's/she's at the mall.

sorry thats just how I feel

"I guess it's somewhat of a response to the war and Katrina. One doesn't have to be in the armed forces or directly involved to become wounded or affected. I didn't intend to make light of or disrespect the medal."

The text, should it be added, should be on the back of the shirt.

I guess it doesnt have to have a negative meaning, but I dont want to be the one wearing it and getting my ass kicked by some kid whose dad was in the war or something. I dont know. Even with text it seems a little iffy and im kind of indecisive on whether i like it or not.

I dont think I'm going to score it,

I really like the design and it was really well done...

However, I have to agree with many of the above comments. Your heart may be in the right place, but your choice of symbolism is not.

I looked it up for you...from what I can tell it most certainly is illegal for this shirt to be produced without permission from the Army.

Google 32cfr507.10 for the reg.

I don't think the purple heart has anything to do with Katrina. I won't say anything about the people who didn't move, they lost everything, and that is sad and they need help, yes. But I would also be very angry to see some kid wear it on the street. My grandfather earned the purple heart in WWII fighting the Axis, and no average person or Katrina sympathizer deserves this kind of honor. You can't buy the purple heart for yourself. You have to earn it, as with any true medal.

There is a bill, "The Stolen Valor Act," that has been introduced to make medal fraud (i.e. wearing the purple heart image without having earned one) a federal crime.

not really feeling the idea behind the design

its rendered well

but we need to take attention away from war

not glorify it

shouldnt we get medals for saving lives as well as taking them??

I am going to have to agree with everyone else who says this should not be done.

As for the poeple who are talking shit about the victims of Katrina, that is really shallow and disgusting. Those people didn't have the option to move out of New Orleans. The majority of the poeple who stayed in the city didn't even have cars. If you have no money, and everyone and everything you love is in that city, why would you give up everything you have to leave? Also, I don't think many people were aware of the risks of living in New Orleans. Those people did lose everything though, and they deserve at least our sympathy if not our help for that.
gethsemene
gethsemene on Sep 19 '05
I'm unclear about how someone wearing a t-shirt with a purple heart on it could in any way be linked to Katrina. Will this t-shirt only be sold to those who lost something in Katrina? Even if that were the case, as much as I sympathize with those poor folks who lost their homes and belongings in Katrina, the purple heart is awarded to those who acted with valor in a terrible situation, not those who had a terrible situation dumped on them and had no choice of action.

great art always stimulates mixed responses - that your shirt got everyone talking makes it an automatic 4, cause i'd wear it makes it a 5.

Too bad they're selling them on E-Bay now...read an article about it in the paper.

I'm in agreement...it's disrespectful to the people who earned the honor of possessing one of these medals.

i dont think its cool to put something which means so much to people on your shirt. its a really nice render but there is a big difference between being topical and patriotic and being controversial for the sake of it. 00000---
goodncrispy
goodncrispy on Sep 20 '05
ok, well I had no idea this would create such a stir. For the record, I was NOT trying to be 'controversial.' Especially for 'the sake of it.'

The dialogue has been interesting though. Thanks for all comments.

Again, I mean no disrespect. Not that it should change your opinion necessarily.
blandford
blandford on Sep 20 '05
I like the idea you intened to show, but it seems like disrespectful people would wear this. "I deserve a medal." ick. Maybe there's a better symbol out there? Personally, I wouldn't wear it. My husband's father had a real one.
gkok
gkok on Sep 20 '05
I like the graphic, but can see the issue with wearing it - why not make it a more non-descript medal - make it up! we can award ourselves any type of medal, the army doesn't have be the only one's who do it.

What do you deserve a medal for?

I really want to give this a 5$, but my grandfather received a purple heart when he was in vietnam. I feel like i'd somehow be cheapening his award by wearing this shirt. it is really well done, though.

I guess I'm a little old school...nobody should buy this shirt. 1. Anyone not in service and not wounded should never wear this. 2. Anyone in service and not wounded should wear this. 3. Anyone in service and wounded would never wear this. Shouldnt be made...thats my take.

DDRLord on Sep 22 '05
Damn, this is a pretty tough shirt to rate.

The execution is top notch, but the shirt itself would be a bit offensive.

I personally would not be willing to buy it, but I feel it still deserves a high score.

5 but totally not buy.

But please, please, PLEASE keep cranking out shirts.

You've got serious talent, and I'd hate politics to be a problem.

(I'm personally thinking of buying Barrel of Love for my little lady, assuming it gets printed.)

It's an interesting idea. I agree that the shirt color is a bad choice. I personally couldn't wear it because I know too many people that have been rightly issued the purple heart. It feels wrong to parade it around in this fashion.

I also am not too sure about the execution myself. If you're going to go minimal on a design, you HAVE to make sure all the details are deliberate and precise. The vector work feels sloppy to me, not intentionally sloppy mind you, but lazy sloppy.
